-Sleeping Tips & Mummy Tricks-

by Kelly Enos on September 10, 2020

The first few months with your newborn are just wonderful, I actually miss that time with George so much. I miss the whirlwind feeling, it was like we were on holiday and nothing and no one mattered outside of our house, it really was a baby bubble.

As far as routines go, for at least the first 2-3 months, JUST ENJOY! Don’t worry about the fact you put them to bed at 11:00pm one night and 6:00pm the next. Don’t put any more pressure on yourself. Do chill or even get some rest when they’re sleeping, refuse visitors if you’re not ready to talk about the birth or you’re simply just not ready. When the texts start piling in congratulating you just text back saying “thank you so much, we are just soaking it all up right now. I’ll let you know when we are ready for visitors.” Everyone will respect that.

When you feel like you’re getting to grips with things you start to realise that baby is feeding every 2-3 hours and at certain times of the day/night. Just try your best to stick to those times on a daily basis and slowly but surely your routine will start to take form. Its not something you can have down to a tee in a week and it might not be the same as someone else’s, but it will work for you.

I do believe that routine is THE BEST thing to do when the time is right. It allows you to understand what baby needs and when. That way, they’re happy, you’re happy and just feel a little more in control of the situation. This, I truly believe is the foundation of babies sleeping through.

Start off simple by making bath time at the same time. That night-time feed at the same time, even read them a story at the same time. I also did George’s daytime naps in a separate place and bed. He slept in his moses basket through the day and near a window with some natural light coming through. And in his cocoonababy only at night in the bedroom. We put white noise on the Alexa through the night too. Just ask her to play it on a loop, not too loud but enough so baby can clearly hear it. THIS was a huge help to keep him asleep for longer. (Which we all need). I really rate the cocoonababy, Ill pop a link below so you can check it out.

When babies get to around the 6/7 month mark and they sadly move into their own room, the best advice I can give to start the self-soothing process is again, routine.

Our evening routine went like this;

  • 5:00pm – Bottle
  • 6:00/6:30pm – Bath, moisturise… turn lights down, only lamps and low lighting. Turn the television volume down. Gentle play or read a book… (this makes a difference) Winding down is KEY to baby understanding bedtime is coming.
  • 7:00pm- Bottle, burp and bed.

 When you pop them in their cot, make sure they are awake. If your baby falls asleep on you, when they wake up and they are in their cot they are confused and get really upset…. Put them in their sleepbag (or whatever you chose), set white noise up. Give them a kiss, say goodnight and that you’ll see them in the morning, love you etc etc. If George cried, I would go back in, and just say “shhh, shhh shhh” softly, pop his dummy back in, wait until he had settled and walk back out. I wouldn’t pick him up out of his cot. You want to make any waking up in the middle of the night a military operation. No eye contact, no television or playing. Make it as boring as possible. Feed or change their nappy and put them back to bed. This way they very quickly learn that 2am is NOT playtime, its bedtime.

 I just want to add that I’m not saying these tips WILL work for you. Every baby is different as is every mum. That’s the beauty of it. BUT if you take away just one of these things, try it and it works. Then I’m happy.

If you have any questions or want any more advice with sleeping. I’ll do my best to help. Just leave a comment or message me on Instagram.

Thank you as always for your love, support and for reading my blogs. You lot really are the best kind of people.

See you in the next one. With Love,

Kelly & George x
